Almost traditionally, Huawei uses synergy effects between its brands, cultivating a two-pronged market penetration for different customers. Thus, Huawei’s self-image and the external image developed over the past few years from the China mobile phone manufacturer to the product of noble smartphones with a good price-performance ratio. Honor, on the other hand, focuses on price-conscious youth and the young at heart. Pure online sales and a lot of new marketing strategies are the trademarks of the second brand.

Now, this same second brand has introduced the Honor 7X, a smartphone that technically resembles the brother Huawei Mate 10 Lite like an egg to another. But optically, Honor has copied more than a few details from the Mate 10 Lite.

Design

The Huawei Honor 7X once again impressively proves that a high-quality smartphone does not have to cost just € 500. Due to its strongly rounded corners, the cell phone is still very comfortable in the hand despite its enormously large display. The build quality is excellent through and through. The phone is solid and provides both a visual and a haptic a clear premium feeling. The case is completely made of metal and is broken only on the back by two thin antenna strips. With a width of 7.6mm is a very slim smartphone and the low weight of 165g ensures that the Honor 7X can be stowed hardly noticeable in the pocket.

The Honor 7X is not a borderless smartphone, but the manufacturer has made an effort to reduce the margins to a minimum (about 2.6mm left and right, and 9mm above and below). With dimensions of 155x75mm the phone is a bit more compact than the 18:9 5.9 inch smartphone Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus and even compared to the 5.5-inch phone Xiaomi Mi A1, the Honor 7X is only half a centimeter longer. Unfortunately, the soft-touch buttons had to give way to the large display on the front and were replaced by on-screen buttons. The position of the buttons can be adjusted in the options menu of the mobile phone to your own preferences. The front camera and a notification LED are on the top. It’s a bit of a pity that the Honor 7X has no up-to-date USB Type C connection, which would actually be appropriate for the selling price of the device. From the processing side, the Honor 7X can convince in full line. The phone is still compact despite its very large screen and only slightly larger than most 5.5-inch smartphones. In addition, the cell phone is excellent in the hand thanks to its rounded housing and is also very light.

Appearance

The Honor 7X follows the current trend and has a 5.93-inch display in 18:9 format. The panel has a resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels. With a pixel density of 407 ppi, it is no longer possible to detect individual pixels even at very close distances. In addition to the good sharpness, the display also knows strong colors and a good brightness to convince. In direct comparison with the Xiaomi Mi A1, the Honor 7X is somewhat less bright, but this is not really noticeable in everyday use. The IPS panel also provides very stable viewing angles and good contrast. There is no mode for improving sunlight readability, and in strong sunlight, the phone reflects slightly more than the Xiaomi. Overall, you can certify the display but also in outdoor use still a good readability.

The color representation of the Honor 7X is a bit too cool for my taste. White appears almost bluish on the display. However, this can be easily corrected with the integrated tool for setting the color temperature. The built-in display glass is scratch-resistant Gorilla glass. The version is not specified by Honor, but we can find no scratches on the display after 2 weeks of use.

There are also a few nice additional functions on the part of the software. This allows you to set a read mode with reduced blue light for the evening hours. Obligatory for a large 6 display is also a split-screen mode integrated. Not all apps are compatible with this one. Of course, the Chinese conglomerate with Qualcomm has a powerful competitor, but Huawei with its HiSilicon processors overtakes the advantage of the Americans more and more. The Honor 7X runs with a HiSilicon Kirin 659. The CPU was introduced in mid-2017 and is positioned in the upper middle class. It has 4 Cortex A53 cores with 2.36 GHz in the power cluster and another 4 cores at 1.7 GHz in the power-saving cluster. With the performance of a Snapdragon 660 ( Xiaomi Mi Note 3), the chipset can not quite keep up, but the performance of a Snapdragon 625 ( Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus & Xiaomi Mi A1 ) is quite equal. In any case, the Honor 7X never let me wait long in everyday use.

Apps open at lightning speed and thanks to the large main memory, there are no restrictions on multitasking. In the use of processor-heavy applications, the Honor 7X is even a tad faster than the Xiaomi Mi A1, which is positioned in a similar price range. By contrast, the Mali-T830 graphics processor offers slightly less power than its competitors. Although all current games can still be played fluently on the Honor 7X, there are some more frame drops and mini lags on the most demanding titles than on the devices with Qualcomm Adreno GPU.

EMUI

The Huawei Honor 7X runs on Android 7 based on EMUI 5.1. An Android 8 update is scheduled for July 2018. Regardless of the Android version, the Huawei EMUI system is already so heavily modified that there is not much to see from the base. All in all, I had a lot of fun during the testing phase with the Honor 7X EMUI system, which offers many useful features. In addition to a good system speed and a variety of different layouts, it is, in particular, the useful additional features that make EMUI also very appealing to advanced users, For example, you can set whether you want to use the launcher with an app overview button, or whether all apps should be stored on the home screen. The function of the on-screen buttons can be set as desired. In a security and notification center, you can precisely configure which apps get which access rights or which display modes can be used for news. Camera

If you spend some time setting the shutter speed in the Pro mode of the camera, you will get slightly better pictures.

A very positive impression, however, makes the 8-megapixel selfie camera, which produces many details, a realistic color reproduction and above average recordings. Videos can be recorded with Full HD @ 30FPS. Again, the quality is very good, as long as you keep the phone quiet. Moving pictures are too restless due to the lack of image stabilization. Unfortunately, there is no full-HD mode with 60FPS or 4K recordings.

Dual Camera Functions

The second camera on the back has only 2 megapixels and is therefore not to be regarded as a full telephoto lens, as is the case for example with the Xiaomi Mi A1.Therefore there is no optical double zoom. Instead, the dual-camera function is to improve the low-light and bokeh portrait photos. However, we could not be convinced by an improved low-light performance in the test. Portrait shots with a blurred background are possible on the Honor 7X, but the result is not really usable here either. Even after tens of attempts, we have not been able to produce a single beautiful shot, because the separation of the background does not work reliably. The Xiaomi Mi A1 or the more expensiveHonor 9 achieved much better results here.

Connectivity

As for the sound output of the Honor 7X, the built-in speaker can only produce average quality. Although the sound is sufficient for an occasional Youtube video, the phone sounds rather tinny and stands behind a Xiaomi Mi A1 or Redmi 5 Plus. The 3.5mm headphone jack provides a useful sound for on the go.

On sensors, the Honor 7X offers an e-compass, a gyroscope and, of course, proximity, acceleration, and brightness sensors. The use of VR content works on the smartphone. On other gimmicks such as NFC or infrared transmitter was waived. Also saved on the Wifi module, which does not support the latest .ac standard. The range and data throughput are still sufficient for surfing and streaming, which is why you should not consider this as too big a minus point. The integrated GPS receiver is very well suited for navigation in the car and on foot. The Honor 7X determines the location in a few seconds and navigated on our test track without dropouts or jumps. To emphasize is still the very good fingerprint sensor on the back. This unlocks the smartphone reliably from standby. The scanner works much faster than most of its price range and ensures that the mobile phone is always ready for use.

Battery

The Honor 7X has a 3340mAh battery installed. For a 5.93 inch smartphone, this is actually not a very good value. Apparently, the low capacity but offset by the energy-efficient HiSilicon processor. During the test phase, it never happened to me that the smartphone went out before the end of the day.
