Huawei Responded to Rumors of Developing Independent OS

According to South China Morning Post, Huawei has been developing and improving its own mobile operating system to break iOS and Android monopoly. As the report claims, the company started building its own operating system after a US investigation into Huawei and ZTE in 2012.

The report said the operating system’s plan began with Ren Zhengfei, the founder of Huawei, and the company has never given up this plan and considered it as a strategic investment to prepare for the worst-case scenario. However, because the system is not as good as Android, and lacks third-party application developers, Huawei has not released it yet.

Globally, Huawei is the company that invests the most in R&D. Last year, Huawei spent $14.2 billion on research and development, accounting for 14.9% of its revenue, second only to Amazon, and surpassing Google.

As for now, Huawei has also developed its own chip and used in its own smartphones, including the high-end Mate 10 and P20 series. However, President of Huawei Honor, Zhao Ming stated at the Global Mobile Internet Conference on Thursday that developing an operating system is a question of ability and necessity. He believes that ‘There is no doubt that Huawei has the ability to do this, but it is not necessary at present. Because we work very closely with Google and will continue to use Android.’

According to Gartner’s estimates, Android and Apple’s iOS basically occupy the entire market of smartphone operating systems, accounting for 99.9%. To break this monopoly, many companies have ambitions for developing operating systems such as Microsoft’s Windows Mobile, Samsung’s Tizen, and Nokia’s Symbian. It seems that these efforts have not been successful.

Today Huawei responded to the rumors of developing an independent operating system to replace Android. On April 29, Huawei stated in its response to the rumors saying that in the foreseeable future, Huawei did not release its own OS (operating system) plan. ‘Our focus is on Android OS products.
