MediaTek Announced Helio P90 SoC

This afternoon, MediaTek held the Helio P90 Release and Global Partner Conference in Shenzhen, officially launching the Helio P90, a new generation AI mobile platform solution. The theme of the event was ‘AI does not put it down’.

MediaTek Helio P90

In terms of AI performance, MediaTek first announced that the Helio P90 has defeated the flagship processors of the Kirin 980 and the Snapdragon 855, thanks to the new APU 2.0 AI computing architecture, using only half of the power consumption.

At the same time, Helio P90 can also expand multi-person gesture recognition, real-time 3D human gesture recognition, real-time multi-object recognition, and other functions for smartphones.

In terms of parameters, the Helio P90 adopts the TSMC 12nm process; the CPU adopts an octa-core design, with two 2.2GHz Cortex A75 large cores and six 2.0GHz Cortex A55 small cores; the GPU is Imagination’s IMG 9XM-HP8, and MediaTek claims the GPU performance is 50% higher than the previous generation Mali-G72 MP3.

In addition, the Helio P90 supports up to dual – 8GB LPDDR4X-1866MHz memory, UFS 2.1 flash storage, and a screen resolution of up to 2520 x 1080.

In terms of network connectivity, the Helio P90 supports dual-card dual 4G VoLTE, Cat-12, three-carrier aggregation, up/down bandwidth up to 150/600Mbps, and 4×4 MIMO, dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0. According to the official data, the Helio P90 network latency is reduced by 90% compared to the previous generation, and call and transmission power consumption is reduced by 20%.

As for the camera, the Helio P90 supports up to 48MP for a single camera and 24MP + 16MP for a dual-camera, and the industry’s first triple-core ISP simultaneous turn-on, triple-focus optical zoom seamless switching, AI face detection engine and more to provide a better camera and video experience for smartphones. It can shoot 480fps slow-motion videos. At the same time, when shooting in a low-light environment, a multi-frame noise reduction system providing AI buckling is used.

However, the Helio P90 is still considered to be a mid-range SoC, and the main competitors in the future should be the Snapdragon 710 and 670, instead of the mentioned Kirin 980 and SND855. But MediaTek emphasizes that AI performance is the main feature of Helio P90. After upgrading the APU 2.0 computing unit, its AI computing power is further enhanced, four times higher than the previous generation, exceeding 1.1 TMACs (1.1 trillion times multiply-accumulate operation). The consumption is 50% lower than the previous generation, and the bandwidth demand is also reduced by 50%.
