OPPO R17 and OPPO R17 Pro Officially Released
A few hours ago, OPPO held a press conference in Shanghai and launched the new OPPO R17 and R17 Pro two smartphones. The previous series came with a name of OPPO R15. So we can state OPPO continues the two-step naming tradition. Of course, the OPPO Find X is the best creation of the manufacturer. But it is not affordable for many customers. In this sense, the R17 series handsets look more attractive. At the same time, they come with the latest technologies and hardware. So they are the worthy annual flagships of the company.
OPPO R17 Appearance
Since the release of iPhone X last year, smartphone manufacturers around the world have aimed at the notch design, and the uniform appearance has also reduced the recognition of phones. The OPPO R17 series abandoned the common U-shaped bangs and designed a new style officially called ‘drop screen.’
According to the official introduction, the design of the water drop screen is inspired by the ‘water droplets that are about to fall on the edge of the lotus leaf.’
The water drop screen design is 45.8% smaller than the R15 U-shaped notch area, which makes the R17 screen ratio reach 91.5%. There is only one front camera on the drop screen, and the light sensor is ‘hidden’ to the bottom of the screen on the right side of the drop. It is the first phone to come in with the sixth generation Corning Gorilla Glass.
Two different new gradient effects were used on the back of the fuselage. The neon purple color uses the same effect seen in the previous model, while the streamer blue uses all four angles to change the color.
On-Screen Fingerprint Identification
The OPPO R17 and R17 Pro did not apply the Find X’s structured light technology. Instead, they come with a screen fingerprint technology, which is officially called ‘light sense screen fingerprint.’ As the name suggests, the fingerprint is identified by reflected light. The R17’s light-sensitive screen fingerprint technology is the first to use CMOS scheme and MicroLens, with the 3P lens, greatly improving the amount of incoming light to improve identification efficiency. Moreover, this technology can be used to implement mobile payments.
OPPO R17 Camera
The OPPO R17 uses the Sony IMX519 sensor for taking pictures, which is the same as that used in the previous R15. But this time, the AI intelligent scene recognition function was slightly upgraded. Now it is able to identify 21 types of independent scenes and 6 kinds of post-processing. The pre-capture pixel is raised to 25MP, which can detect 296 facial recognition points of the user.
Finally, OPPO added O-moji sprouting function to the photographing. Its principle is more biased towards the similar functions previously introduced by Samsung. The OPPO’s cute shooting function allows you to choose your hair, clothing, and accessories. In addition to virtual characters, there are 12 animals to choose from. The shoot function can be used for front self-timer or rear camera.
As for the OPPO R17 Pro, it sports an F1.5/F2.4 smart aperture that automatically switches the aperture size according to lighting conditions and intelligently adjusts the amount of light entering.
This phone is equipped with the OPPO AI Super Clear Engine, which brings two enhancements: a new ultra-clear night scene and pixel-level color reconstruction, providing a full range of software optimization for each photo.
OPPO R17 Performance
In August of this year, Qualcomm released an iterative update version of the Snapdragon 660 processor, the Snapdragon 670, which is Qualcomm’s first Snapdragon 600-based chip based on a 10nm process. In less than a month, this processor was applied to the OPPO R17.
The Snapdragon 670 processor integrates two Kryo 360 performance cores with a maximum speed of 2.0GHz on the CPU side, in addition to six 1.7GHz Kryo 360 efficiency cores.
According to Qualcomm, in terms of CPU performance, the Snapdragon 670 has improved by 15% compared to the Snapdragon 660. On the GPU side, the Snapdragon 670 integrates the Adreno 615 graphics processor, which is 25% better than the Adreno 512 of the Snapdragon 660. The Snapdragon 670 supports up to 8GB of LPDDR4X memory and Aqstic audio technology.
Unlike this variant, the OPPO R17 PRO is packed with a 6.4-inch drop screen, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor, 8GB of memory, 128GB of storage, a front-facing 25MP camera, and a ColorOS 5.2 system based on Android’s deep customization.
The Black Technology Of OPPO R17 Pro
Another protagonist of this conference is the OPPO R17 Pro. Although it looks like the R17, it has more cutting-edge technologies and can be said to be completely another smartphone.
The shape of this phone is roughly the same as that of the R17, but there are three lenses on the back. This is also the second smartphone with a three-lens in the world except for the Huawei P20 Pro.
One of three lenses of the OPPO R17 Pro supports TOF 3D vision technology. TOF stands for Time of Flight. Its principle is to adapt to a special transmitter to emit modulated near-infrared light (OPPO uses a wavelength of 940 nm laser). The light meets people or objects after reflection. After that, it is folded back to the receiver. By measuring the time required for this process, the distance from the object can be calculated. The absolute accuracy between the phone and the subject is 1%, and the relative accuracy between the two subjects is 0.5%.
Super VOOC flash charging
In addition, the OPPO R17 Pro also supports Super VOOC flash charging, which is the most advanced technology available in the Find X Lamborghini version. It can charge the battery to 40% in 10 minutes and can be filled in an hour. It uses an equivalent 3700mAh battery energy, charging power up to 50W.
The official stressed that OPPO SuperVOOC has passed the safety test of the Rheinland laboratory, including a 1000 cycles test, 600 independent fast charge, and fast release battery life tests, 10,000 hotplug test of charging terminal under charging state and more than 30 system-level testing, such as stringent requirements, ensure stability and reliability.
OPPO R17 Series Pricing
The OPPO R17’s 6+128GB version is priced at 3,199 yuan ($464), and the 8+128GB version is priced at 3,499 yuan ($507). It will be available for sale on August 30. The R17 Pro is priced at 4,299 yuan and will be available for sale in mid-October.
