Review of Cubot Max vs Xiaomi MI MAX – Design, Antutu, Camera, Battery

Xiaomi Mi Max and Cubot Max are one of the biggest mobiles that someone can find in the market. Mi Max with a display of 6.4 inches and Cubot Max at 6.0 inches, are both BIG! The Cubot Max is a mobile, and as the name says, we are dealing with a handset sporting great features at the top level. Xiaomi Mi Max must be the mobile with the biggest screen I have tested and for sure is for people with big hands!

Design

The Cubot Max is a big smartphone. As we said, the handset is designed for users with large hands or use both hands if you must. For that, Cubot has curved the edges and corners, so when handling you can access larger area of the screen, without to fear that might slip off your hands. So when looking or handling the Cubot Max many can think they are dealing with an impressionist work, due to the sketchy back cover. This can be a selling feature, but on the other hand many users can avoid such covers, as the most customers prefer standard smooth back covers. Anyway, we should write down that designers have worked much and tried to bring something new and something elegant to the market. As for the location of different buttons and slots, everything is in place. The only different is a mini HDMI port for charging or data transfer on the top of the mobile, next to the audio jack. As for dimensions, it comes at 164.5mm×83.5mm×8.95mm, thus we are dealing with a phablet at the average thickness. I mean this is not a bulky phone, but we can’t say it has a slim body. The phone is a bit heavy – it weighs 203 grams. At the end, the Cubot Max is available in three colors – black, silver and gold.

Xiaomi Mi Max on the other hand, is made out of metal. Everything about the Xiaomi Mi Max is as premium as it gets. The size of this device can be a problem for some people because it is really big, so don’t expect using with one hand. Although it is very big, it is incredibly thin with only 7.5mm. Because it is made from aluminum alloy, it weighs only 200 grams. On the front side of the device, there is a humongous 6.44-Inch 2.5D curved screen with little to no bezels on the sides and capacitive Android navigation buttons bellow. The back side is totally flat with minimal design elements, and it comes either in light gray or champagne. The buttons are made out of metal as well and are very clicky and responsive.

Antutu

Cubot Max is powered with a MT6753A Cortex-A53 octa-core processor paired with a Mali-T720 GPU, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of ROM that can be expanded via microSD card slot up to 128GB. As you guess this features set is able to provide high class performance when it comes not only to opening applications, but also to shooting or playback ultra-high-definition videos. At Antutu reaches up to 38338 points

Xiaomi Mi Max comes in several variants depending on the internal storage, the amount of RAM and different chipset. The small version features a 64-bit hexa-core Snapdragon 650 CPU, Adreno 510 GPU, and 3GB of LPDDR3 RAM for better multitasking. The big version is equipped with 4GB of RAM and Snapdragon 652 chipset. Keep in mind that this chipset in considered middle-end. Still, it was very fun playing games and browsing on such a big screen. As for the Antutu, Mi Max reaches the score of 73051 points.

Camera

The Cubot Max is equipped with two cameras. The front camera of 5MP camera, and a 13MP camera on the back. The back camera features autofocus, 4P lens, f/2.0 aperture and 0.5Ax2 LED flashlight meaning it will take great photos even in dark or low light conditions.

Xiaomi Mi Max features a 16-Megapixel camera sensor with PDAF and wide f/2.0 aperture. Mi Max is equipped with several shooting modes like HDR, smile detection, face detection, beauty face, panorama, etc. Picture quality is quite good. Colors were spot on most of the time while the dynamic range was lacking (HDR mode can compensate for that). Sharpening is very aggressive, but that is a standard for many devices these days. Low light shots weren’t that great, and you should stick with dual tone LED flash for the subjects in close distance. Video recording is limited to 1080p @ 30fps (chipset could easily cope with 4K), but videos seem very nice and smooth. There is a slow-mo recording @ 720p with 120fps. The front camera sensor is of 5-Megapixel, and it features 85 degrees wide angle lens. Camera quality is moderate, but it can be used for selfies or video calls perfectly. Another interesting thing about the camera is that you can shoot with the use of fingerprint scanner, and it works with both cameras.

Battery

You know better than me wide screens need larger batteries. The Cubot Max sports a 4100 mAh battery, which can provide 7-10 hours of video playing or up to 11 hours of actual test, thus you can surf in the net, call, text, play or something else, and the battery will keep charged. The battery is removable, something that you find it rare now days.

Xiaomi Mi Max has a built-in 4850mAh lithium-ion battery. Since the screen display is only in 1080p resolution, it is not draining as much battery as you might have thought. When using the device regularly, it can last more than a day depending on the usage and signal reception. Another good thing that Mi Max has, is the Qualcomm quick charging 3.0 technology. With the use of this tech you can charge this large battery in less than two hours and that is really impressive.

Conclusion

I have to admit that Xiaomi Mi Max look much better from Cubot Max. But if we take under consideration that the Cubot has a better camera from Mi Max, the battery is removable and for only 114.99€, you get a very good and big mobile, I would toss it easily. On the other hand, Mi Max comes for 195.99€, almost twice the price from Cubot, but with better characteristics. So if you are looking for a good, big mobile, Cubot Max is your choice.
