Will Dual-Screen Smartphones Become a Trend?

The current smartphone market is led by the single-screen smartphones. But at the end of the year, three manufacturers announced dual-screen smartphones – the Hisense A6, VIVO NEX Dual-Screen Version, and Nubia X. Each of these handsets has its own selling points, giving consumers new purchase options, also, bringing a new breath the entire smartphone industry.

Actually, when using these dual-screen smartphones, we understand they are subject to technology, the convenience in use is limited, and the screen quality is not as good as that of single-screen. So taking into account these limitations, we wonder whether it is going to become a trend.

First, the dual-screen technology is still in short supply

Though it’s not difficult to make a dual-screen, we should pay attention to the fact it still requires to purchase components. For example, what kind of screen to buy, what is the internal cable design, etc. This requires the phone’s designer to conduct special research, which undoubtedly increases the complexity of the phone’s wiring, and has a higher demand for heat dissipation.

If the smartphone manufacturer decides to use the best components for both the main screen and the secondary screen, the material cost of the device will increase dramatically. After all, the screen cost occupies a large part of the components cost, especially the high-end screen. Obviously, dual-screen phones with excellent quality will put a lot of pressure on consumers in terms of cost and price.

So we should state today’s dual-screen smartphones are more like an experiment, coming our way from the manufacturers.

Second, the system specification has not been completed

The launch of the folding screen smartphone not only needs technical support but also the cooperation with the system. Google has already specially optimized its operating system for such phones. And the same is true for the dual-screen smartphones.

Compared with the traditional smartphone, the operating system of the dual-screen smartphone increases the learning cost. Thus, the consumer also needs to spend more time to adapt to the development logic of the dual-screen smartphone. Accordingly, the app developer needs more time to address these dual-screen devices for special optimization.

From the perspective of the dual-screen smartphones provided by the current manufacturers, the secondary screen is more like the expansion of the main screen, and there is no special feature assigned to it.

Summary, dual-screen smartphone is just an embellishment

Honestly, dual-screen smartphones have always existed. For example, Samsung’s W-series uses a dual-screen display. However, we have carefully thought about it. As the underlying system provider, Google has not introduced Android design specifications that are fully compatible with dual-screen smartphones. At the same time, there are many types of dual-screen phones, and if there is no gap between them and single-screen phones, then the dual-screen phone is more like a gimmick than a pain point.

Today’s dual-screen smartphone seems to be the same as a folding screen phone. It is more like to give users a choice, but it is very difficult to replace the current single-screen handsets.
