Xiaomi and OPPO Introduced New-Gen Screen Fingerprint Technologies

The smartphone screen fingerprint technology has been developed for nearly a year, but there are some questions concerning its speed and other aspects. Say you have to find a certain location to put your finger and unlock the screen. Seems this limitation is likely to be resolved this year. At least, two companies have already introduced identical technologies this afternoon.

On January 16, OPPO announced the ‘Optical Screen Fingerprint Technology’ at today’s communication meeting. Thus, OPPO can consider the screen fingerprint recognition area of the smartphone. At the same time, the optical domain screen fingerprint innovatively joins the simultaneous input and authentication functions of the two fingers to achieve an exponential increase in security.

The gold-based screen fingerprint technology recognition area reaches 15 times of the current mainstream optical solution, and supports unique functions such as ‘black screen blind operation’ and ‘optical domain encryption’.

Although OPPO does not currently disclose which smartphone will launch this technology first, this technology will be commercially available in 2019.

Compared with the traditional screen fingerprint recognition, the light domain screen fingerprint technology supports black screen unlocking, and the recognized area is larger, which is more in line with the range of the thumb on the touchscreen, and there is no need to deliberately find the recognition position of the screen fingerprint.

At the same time, this technology can also support two-finger unlocking (any two fingerprints), which takes the security to a higher level. For example, you can enter the fingerprints of yours and your girlfriend. So only when you both enter the fingerprints, you can open an app.

This morning, Xiaomi President Lin Bin exposed Xiaomi’s latest screen fingerprint technology on Weibo. Its unlocking area is way larger at 50.2mm×25mm. From the video we can see that the process of entering the fingerprint only needs to press the finger in a specific area, waiting for about one second to enter the fingerprint, which is much more efficient than the previous multiple lifting methods.

However, in the comments, Xiaomi’s product director pointed out that the cost of this technology is high and he is still considering whether to install the technology into the production machine.
