Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro Gets an Update To Enable Facial Unlock

Before the launch of the Apple iPhone X, the fingerprint identification has been the most common way to unlock the phone and to secure the data in it. But with the release of Apple’s anniversary phone and the Face ID, everything changed. The facial identification has become one of the most required features in a smartphone. This is a must-be feature even in low-end and mid-range handsets. That’s why you shouldn’t be surprised when seeing a smartphone from these categories coming with a facial unlock feature. This is right even for the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro.

India is the second biggest market for the Chinese Apple. That’s why it brings many of its products to it first. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro and Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 were launched a few days back. But they went on sale this morning and sold out in minutes. At the launch, Xiaomi promised to bring the facial unlock feature via an OTA update in March. But today it surprised the Mi fans by pushing out an update over the air enabling this feature.

In the update description, the company says the facial unlock algorithm scans facial features in roughly 500ms using a high-accuracy matching mechanism. Thus it works way faster than the fingerprint reader. On the other hand, this feature is not as secured as the fingerprint identification.

The update carries a title of MIUI v9.2.4 NEIMIEK and it comes with a size of 1.6GB. Thus it includes not only facial unlock enabling features, but also brings significant camera improvements and stability optimizations.
