The first mobile chip of Xiaomi is the Surge S1 that was announced in February 2017. Since that we haven’t heard anything serious about the second-gen Xiaomi Surge S2 SoC. But it doesn’t mean that the manufacturer is not working on it. Adhering to the self-developed processor is still a correct path, but it requires a number of manufacturers, patience, and funding. Today, Taiwan’s Electronics Times reported that Xiaomi has reached a secret agreement with TSMC, which will produce the Surge S2 processor based on a 16nm process node.
Actually, it took 28 months from the project to become a real product for the Surge S1. The latter uses an octa-core design. The 64-bit cores are clocked at up to 2.2GHz (4 x A53 large cores + 4 x A53 small cores). The processor is coupled with a quad-core Mali T860 graphics processor. It also supports 32 high-performance voice DSP and VoLTE high-quality audio and video calls.
Earlier in June 2017, it was said the Surge S2 had gone on a mass production. It’s been expected the new chip will debut along with the Xiaomi Mi 6C like the previous case. But until today, we have seen neither the Mi 6C nor the Surge S2.
However, taking into account the previous leaks, we can say the Xiaomi Surge S2 chip will be based on TSMC’s 16nm process technology and still uses an octa-core design. There are four A73s with a frequency of 2.2GHz and four A53s with a frequency of 1.8GHz. The built-in GPU is a Mali G71MP8. Its performance should be close to the Kirin 960.
