Huawei Announced A Very Scary Technology – GPU Turbo

Today, on June 6, Huawei held a conference and announced three new products – two smartphones and one technology. Previously, the latter was promoted as a scary technology. As for now, we can confirm it is. That very scary technology is called GPU Turbo. As the name suggests, it is a revolutionary graphics processing acceleration technology. It refers to four aspects of high performance, power saving, high picture quality, and game performance.

Before talking about the new products, Yu Chengdong introduced the achievements of their two brands. The Honor e-brands was established back in 2013. Since then, the company runs a dual-brand strategy. So while Huawei is focusing on business, Honor is focusing on users’ experience. That’s why Honor-line handsets are priced lower. As the spokesman said, the efficiency of the dual-brand strategy has been confirmed by the market and has achieved continuous and steady growth. In 2017, the sales volume of Huawei and Honor smartphones reached 153 million units, an increase of 51 times in 7 years.

According to data from GFK, if taking into account the sales of the whole 2017 and January-April of 2018, Huawei and Honor jointly rank the third in the global market, while at the same time they rank the first in China. Its market share exceeds 30%.

As for the GPU Turbo technology, Yu Chengdong said that in the past 10 years, the demand for graphics processing on smartphones has increased by leaps and bounds, whether the resolution is from VGA to 1080P, 2K or even 4K. The games have become large-scale. At the same time, AR/VR and complex image rendering have become increasingly popular, all of which impose extremely high demands on mobile image processing capabilities.

At present, due to a series of technical limitations such as space, heat dissipation, and power consumption, the GPU of the mobile platform has difficulties to completely match the bursting graphics requirements.

GPU Turbo achieves a great improvement in graphics processing efficiency and reduces power consumption through the optimization of software and hardware. Yu Chengdong stated that GPU Turbo broke through the processing bottleneck between the EMUI operating system and the hardware, achieving a great improvement in the graphics processing efficiency of the entire system.

The official measured data show that GPU Turbo can improve graphics processing efficiency by up to 60% and SoC power consumption by 30%.

The Honor Play was introduced at the event as well. It’s the first smartphone coming with GPU Turbo out of the box. But the manufacturer claims other Huawei and Honor smartphones will get this feature in the nearest future via OTA updates. The first butch of models that will get this option is considered to be the Huawei Mate, P series handsets as well as the Honor V10, Honor 10.
